On the birth anniversary of Veer Damodar Savarkar on May 28, Tuesday, Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi paid his tribute to the Indian independence activist and the formulator of the Hindutva philosophy.  PM said that Veer Savarkar is an epitome of courage, patriotism and is an example of commitment towards India. He also added that it was Savarkar who inspired many people to devote themselves towards nation building.

Posting a video on his Twitter, PM-elect Modi said:

"Savarkar's character was full of specialties. He was a devotee of both health (swastha) and (shastra). Savarkar means tej, Savarkar means sacrifice (tyag), Savarkar means  dedication(tap), Savarkar means tarangi, Savarkar means til, Savarkar means strength (talwar). Veer Savarkar is remembered for his courage and fight against the British. But apart from this, he was also a great poet and social reformer who always emphasize harmony and unity. He took poetry and revolution together. Apart from being a poet with sensibilities, he was a courageous revolutionary."

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also paid his tribute to the freedom fighter Savarkar.

In major controversy days ahead of Savarkar's birth anniversary, former Rajasthan education minister Vasudev Devnani on Monday, May 27 flayed the state Congress government for affixing "son of Portugal" to RSS ideologue Vinayak Damodar's description in class 10 social science textbooks.

Recently, the Congress government constituted a textbook revision committee in the school education department. Based on the committee's findings, the department revised a short biography of RSS ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar introduced by the previous BJP government.

Now, in the textbooks, it is mentioned Savarkar had described himself as "son of Portugal" when seeking clemency from the British government in 1910-11.
