In a major political move, the Congress party has reportedly decided to make Priyanka Gandhi Vadra the full in-charge of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. This move by the grand old party comes even after reports of its leader Jyotiraditya Scindia's resignation ultimatum arrived. While Priyanka was undertaking several meetings in Uttar Pradesh after party's massive poll drubbing in Lok Sabha polls, the move, if confirmed, will be yet another step to keep the leadership with the Gandhis and the Vadras.
Congress vs Scindia
Meanwhile a controversy broke out when Jyotiraditya Scindia was reported of giving an ultimatum to the party that he will resign if not made Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) head. On Tuesday, he reacted"People are protesting. You can ask them about it. Whatever decision Congress High Command takes, I will adhere to that," said Scindia. In contrast, earlier on Friday, Scindia had allegedly issued a ten-day ultimatum to Congress saying that he will quit the party if he is not made the MPCC chief. He had also skipped Priyanka Gandhi's meeting which was scheduled on Friday.
Priyanka Vadra in 2019 polls and its aftermath
The Congress party faced its most embarrassing defeat in 2019 parliamentary polls. In Uttar Pradesh where Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was general secretary and poll incharge of UP East, the party won only one seat - the bastion of Rae Bareli (by Sonia Gandhi). Congress even lost its another bastion of Amethi as Rahul Gandhi was defeated by BJP's Smriti Irani. After the massive failure, there were series of resignations in the party and Congress dissolved its district committees in UP in a bit to set its house in order.
Priyanka Gandhi then had set up a three-member panel to look into complaints of gross indiscipline during the election in the state. Priyanka was appointed the General Secretary for UP (East) in January. However, her appointment in UP Congress failed to weave the magic in the state. Moreover, following the defeat, Rahul Gandhi quit as the Congress chief on July 3, taking responsibility for the loss. After more than 50 days without a chief, the Congress reappointed Sonia Gandhi as interim party president.
