AIMPLB meets to decide on review petition challenging SC's Ayodhya verdict
Mulling over the Ayodhya verdict, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Sunday, has called upon on an emergency meeting to decide to file a review
Mulling over the Ayodhya verdict, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Sunday, has called upon on an emergency meeting to decide to file a review petition on the Supreme Court's verdict. AIMPLB is also deciding on whether to accept the 5-acre land offered by the apex court for constructing a mosque within Ayodhya. The AIMPLB will hold a press conference at 3 PM to announce their decision.
AIMPLB decision on review
Sources report that the majority of the working committee members are in favour of filing a review petition. Sources further report that AIMPLB Secretary Zafaryab Jilani and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi have not only supported the review petition but have also suggested the board to reject the alternate land offer. Sources further report that since the Sunni Waqf board chairman has declared that he will not challenge the verdict, AIMPLB is reportedly mulling to approach other Sunni waqf members to gain support for the review petition - which may be filed within two weeks after gaining consensus.
AIMPLB and Owaisi dissatisfied
After the SC's verdict on November 9, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) had said that the body respects the judgment of the Supreme Court on the Ayodhya title case but will think over filing a review after going through the entire judgment. Similarly, Owaisi had quoted Justice Verma to express his dissatisfaction, saying that the 'Supreme Court was Supreme but not infallible'. He also advised the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AMPLB) to reject the SC offer to allot an alternated 5- acre land to construct a mosque.
Ayodhya verdict
Pronouncing the landmark judgment in the Ayodhya dispute case, the Supreme Court on November 9, delivered a unanimous judgment in the title suit of the disputed area awarding it to the Hindu parties for the construction of a temple. It also directed the Centre to come up with a scheme within three months to set up a trust which will hand over the outer courtyard and inner courtyard of the site for construction of a temple. Apart from this, the SC stated that an alternate land of 5 acres is to be allotted to Muslims for the liberty of constructing a mosque, either by the central govt or the State govt, in a suitable and prominent place in Ayodhya. CJI Ranjan Gogoi, while delivering the unanimous judgment, dismissed the claims of the Sunni Central Waqf Board and the Nirmohi Akhara. He also termed that the three-way division of the disputed land by the Allahabad HC in its 2010 verdict is wrong.
