The Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah, while speaking at a function said that Jammu and Kashmir would not remain a Union Territory forever and would regain its statehood once conditions were favourable. He also stated that the popular notion which said that Article 370 protected the Kashmiri identity and culture was a wrong one.

Home Minister Shah interacts with 71 RR batch of IPS

On October 7, Home Minister Shah met and interacted with the probationers of the 71 RR batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) in New Delhi. During this meeting, he said that Article 370 was being misused more for cross-border terrorism rather than protecting Kashmiri people's rights. He also affirmed that the Indian constitution protected all regional identities and drew strong opposition against the misuse of Article 370. Shah also said that IPS must take it as a duty to remove the fear of police from the minds of people and the police should also imbibe a touch of sensitivity. While interacting with the officers, Shah also spoke about the NRC and stressed on why it was needed. He said that NRC was significant not just for national security but also for good governance.

He urged that NRC must not be seen as a political exercise because it is very important to have a national citizen register in order to ensure that all citizens receive equal benefits from the government schemes. He also asked the young probationers to focus on honest performance and added that image is made by not one incident but continuous performance and delivery. "In order to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a $5 trillion economy, it is essential to maintain law and order," Shah said.
