Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has made a heartfelt pitch asking people to join fellow movie legend and recently turned politician Kamal Haasan in his party's effort to help the people who have suffered due to the Cyclone Gaja in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
In a video which was tweeted by Kamal Haasan on Wednesday, Bachchan appealed to people across the country to unite in the spirit of brotherhood and lend their support to the Makkal Needhi Maiam's efforts on the ground to rehabilitate those affected due to Cyclone Gaja.
Bachchan spoke about the devastation caused due to the cyclone saying, "Estimated people rendered homeless is approximately 3.7 lakhs. Between 50-60% of the coconut trees have fallen crippling farmers... Agriculture and livelihood has been crippled in the most fertile regions, the damage is beyond imagination," he said.
"The state and central governments have extended help but the support from volunteers and social welfare organisation, and socially conscious individuals would go a long way in helping affected people, our people," he said.
He also said that spirit of 'one nation, one people was cardinal' in the matter of bringing in relief to those affected in the catastrophe.
"Many of us are unaware about the extent of damage caused due the Cyclone Gaja and the suffering of people due to it but this time to bring out the spirit of brotherhood and be the beacon of humanity come forward to help our own. Kamal Haasan and his people at MNM are working at ground level, so ladies and gentlemen lend your support, my many grateful thanks to you," he said.
Haasan has thanked Bachchan through a tweet, saying that he has clearly communicated the issues faced by the people of Tamil Nadu.
Makkal Needhi Maiam party had started relief efforts in November. The party has said that relief material worth Rs 1.2 crores has been collected and dispatched to the affected areas in 60-70 vehicles by party members.
Haasan had also visited the affected areas to extend his solidarity to the people and inspect the relief measures his party was undertaking there.
