As the doctors' protest has taken momentum across the country on Friday, Shabba Hakim - the daughter of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim - who is a doctor, took to social media and slammed the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal.
In a Facebook post dated June 12, Shabba Hakim has raised questions at the West Bengal government and the police officers posted in the govt hospitals which did little to nothing to protect the doctors. For those asking why patients must suffer amid the agitation, Shabba Hakim had an advice. She asked the people criticising the doctors' protests and strike to raise questions on government as to why the goons surrounded the hospitals and beat up the doctors.
Adding that the doctors have a right to peaceful protest and right to safety at work, she said that "as a TMC supporter she is deeply ashamed" in the action of the Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee in the matter.
"As a TMC supporter, I am deeply ashamed at the inaction and the silence of our leader," the Kolkata Mayor's daughter wrote in her social media post:
Moreover, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abesh Banerjee, who is the son the Trinamool Chief's brother Kartick, also participated in a march by a team of junior doctors from KPC Medical College and Hospital in Jadavpur towards NRS Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.
Junior doctors across Kolkata started the protest two days ago against the physical assault of an intern doctor at the NRS Medical college in the hands of the family of a patient. Following the strike West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the protest on June 13, warning the doctors to resume their duties within the next four hours
Coming out in support of their colleagues in Kolkata, Resident doctors at the AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi and other parts of the country worked with bandages on their heads and black bands on their in a symbolic protest on Thursday. Calls for the suspension of all non-emergency services, including OPD were also made on June 14 to protest against the violence in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has reportedly refused to pass interim order on the strike by junior doctors in state-run hospitals directing West Bengal Government to persuade the doctors to rejoin work.
