The Delhi government, in a circular issued on May 16, has warned restaurants in the national capital that serve alcohol to stop playing recorded music.
In response to alleged complaints about loud music from the vicinity of these establishments, the Delhi excise department's circular states that for restaurants operating under the L-17 license, which permits liquor to be served, "only live singing/playing of instruments by professionals shall be allowed."
It claims that the department has received complaints from the local residents regarding nuisance created by the restaurants holding L-17 license violating provisions.
It implores these establishments to comply with its rules and reiterates that the L-17 licensee is permitted only to have live singing/playing of instruments by professionals within his licensed premises. Violation of these rules shall lead to strict action as per law.
Here's the circular:
Following the circular being issued and the news coming to light, netizens have all manner of opinions on the decision:
Those who see the positive here cite that it would have one meaningful effect -
"Yasss More Employment 👍"
In response to the question: "What is the point of allowing live music by professionals and not recorded music?", a person wrote - "Employment, may be"
Others don't think it's a great idea and have expressed as much (often sarcastically or with suggestions) -
"Something is terribly wrong about Delhi!"
"Means we'll have to keep hearing the same 21-year-old singing the same Atif Aslam song?
"What has loudness got to do with recorded or live?"
"Actually I am overjoyed with this new ruling, I can now go enjoy a drink in peace and rant about the world without losing my voice the next day"
"They could just have rules for decibel levels. I find live music tends to be louder than recorded music."
"Copyright violations?"
"Guess, it should be don't only in the residential area. Not in areas like CP, Hauz Khaz"
