Assam road accident: 3 dead, 8 injured after car bulldozes crowd

Assam witnessed an unfortunate horror as a car jammed into the town of Tinsukia killing three women. Amongst the victims, there was a mother-daughter duo along with several others, who were injured. The accident occurred on September 28. The accident occurred when a large group of women were walking on the Rangagora Road to participate in the Mahalaya festival held in the nearby Durgabari Hall.
Three dead, eight injured
The police notified the media that the car was coming from the Borguri side towards Thana Chariali when it knocked down the pedestrians. This incident left three people dead along with eight of them severely injured. While all the people sustaining injuries have been admitted to the Assam medical college and hospital, two of them are said to be in a critical situation. The injured people have been identified as Ditimoni Gohain, Sangita Devi, Palla Kumari, Lakshmi Saha, Prasenjit Majumdar, Abhinash Gohain, and Basanta Changmai.
"One of the victims Numali Baruah died on the spot while Ritamoni Gohain and her daughter Priya died at the Tinsukia civil hospital. Priya was a first semester student of Tinsukia Womens College." the police said in a statement.
The accident
According to sources, the car driver has been identified as Gaurav Dey. He had allegedly hit a bike and was trying to flee in the speeding car when the accident occurred. He had also knocked down a traffic constable as he was trying to stop him after the first instance. After crashing into the pedestrians, he again tried to speed away but was stopped by the people. The angry crowd thrashed the driver after the accident. The police had to intervene and rescue him. He has also been admitted to the hospital.
''The police have seized the vehicle. We are recording statements of the injured persons and eyewitnesses. The driver of the car will be arrested. He has been admitted to hospital as he was thrashed by the crowd. A case has been registered and action will be taken as per law.'' Tinsukia SP Shiladitya Chetia told the media over the phone.
