Bengaluru traffic police and IISc collaborate to tackle traffic woes through data-driven solution

Bengaluru: In a strategic move to alleviate traffic congestion, Bengaluru City Traffic Police (BTP) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). 

The partnership aims to harness the power of data and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to enhance traffic safety and address mobility challenges in the city.

According to a statement from the traffic police, the MoU involves the sharing of Bengaluru's traffic data with IISc. 

Enabling researchers to collaborate with the traffic police 

This data exchange will enable researchers to collaborate with the traffic police, leveraging AI solutions rooted in data analysis and domain expertise to mitigate congestion.

The MoU also outlines IISc's commitment to supporting safety audits, training initiatives, and capacity building for the city's traffic police force. 

Enhancing the skill set of the traffic police 

The collaboration seeks to enhance the skill set of the traffic police, empowering them with the necessary knowledge base to improve mobility and traffic safety in the bustling metropolis.

MN Anucheth, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru City Traffic), emphasized that the primary goal of the partnership with IISc is to extract valuable insights from underutilized police data to address the city's mobility and traffic safety challenges.

"We anticipate training and capacity building from IISc, providing our staff with the necessary knowledge base to enhance mobility and traffic safety," said Anucheth.

Professor Abdul Rawoof Pinjari, Chair of the Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation, and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) at IISc, expressed optimism about the collaboration. 

He stated, “Data from these initiatives will enable us to contribute significantly to improving city mobility and traffic safety through relevant research projects and tailored training programs.”

The joint efforts of BTP and IISc signify a forward-thinking approach, leveraging data-driven insights to transform Bengaluru's traffic landscape and make commuting safer and more efficient for its residents.
