Technical Glitch Prevented Bombs From Exploding At 19 Locations In Assam, Claims ULFA-I
Eight of these bombs were planted in Guwahati alone, ULFA-I claimed.
In Assam, Ulfa-Independent has claimed responsibility for planting bombs at 19 locations on Independence Day. The group stated that a technical error thwarted their plans, preventing the devices from detonating. Authorities are investigating the incident and have heightened security measures across the region.
In a press release, the banned insurgent group said that bombs have been planted in several areas in Upper Assam, such as Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati, as well as Lower Assam.
Speaking on the matter, the police said they have found "suspicious items" from multiple locations, including Sivasagar and Nagaon.
"We wanted to demonstrate our strength by carrying out bomb explosions today across the state from 6 am to 12 noon at various locations. however, due to technical reasons we had to call off the operation, the ULFA said.
ULFA also listed the following locations: DTO Office, ONGC Number 5 Gate, Dibrugarh Lakuwa Tinali, ASTC, Lakhimpur ASTC, SP Office, Laluk Daily Market, Barghat Police Outpost, Nangav Medical College, Guwahati Dispur Last Gate, Gandhi Mandap, Narengi Army Camp, Pan Bazaar, Jorabat Overbridge, Bhetapara, Maligaon, Rajgarh, Nalbari, and Rangia in Sivasagar district of Assam.
Security tightened over reports of presence ULFA(I)
Assam Police had earlier intensified vigil along its border with Arunachal Pradesh following reports of presence of ULFA(I) militants in the area, a top officer said on Sunday.
There are intelligence inputs of the militants camping near the border with Arunachal Pradesh.
"From our intelligence agencies and also reports from local agencies, we have learnt that a ULFA(I) group is camping near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border," Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said here on the sidelines of a programme.
"All steps are being taken so that they cannot carry out any subversive activities. All security agencies, including police, army, CRPF, are working together," he added.
While urging the militants not to indulge in any violent activities, the DGP said the security forces are also on the alert on their part.
"We hope that the ULFA(I) cadres will not do anything to disrupt the peace in the state. But at the same time, on our side, we have intensified our vigil," Singh added.
