Calcutta High Court bans single-use plastic on court's premises

The Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court has ordered a ban on single-use plastic on the premises of the court. Apart from this, the registrar general of the High Court said that the ban has also been extended to the circuit benches at Jalpaiguri and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan ordered the ban on single-use plastic from October 1. The decision was approved by a 'Full Court', a meeting of all judges of the high court. The registrar general Rabindranath Samanta said, “An awareness program will be held on September 30 at the sesquicentenary building here of the high court, which will be attended by the judges, lawyers, officers, staff and law clerks.”

‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ - a campaign to eliminated single-use plastic

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on the need to get rid of single-use plastic in India a few weeks ago. While he was addressing the ceremony to inaugurate the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh (UP), he also flagged off the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' initiative as well as the National Artificial Insemination Programme. He said, "Mahatma Gandhi's 150 birth anniversary year is a year of inspiration. This is the logic behind the commencement of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign. This movement, starting today has been dedicated to the elimination of plastic menace. Brothers and sisters, the problem arising out of plastic usage is becoming dangerous day by day. You, the residents of Mathura know very well how plastic leads to the death of animals''. Dignitaries like UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Mathura Member of Parliament Hema Malini were present on the occasion.

Anand Mahindra releases an ad campaign to fight plastic use 

Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of Mahindra Group, released an ad campaign on Tuesday, in an initiative to fight the war against all kinds of plastic. According to him, plastic is one of the most lethal weapons. As mentioned in the video, the low-density polythene container (plastic bag) has been clogging landfills and oceans. Mahindra is now focusing on waste management. Earlier on September 13, the Mahindra group, in a bid to reduce plastic usage in the country, decided to replace the use of 'plastic bottles' with refillable metal bottles. The company has recycled, reused and composted over 140,000 tonnes of waste. Mahindra, took to Twitter and posted the video of his ad and urged people to fight plastic.

Antonio Guterres praises India’s decision to ban single-plastic use 

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on Tuesday praised the Indian Government's decision to ban single-use plastic in the country. The government's move is also being seen as an initial effort that goes beyond mere talks of climate change. Guterres said, "I would like to take the opportunity to thank the government of India for supporting the elimination of single-use plastics and for the installations of solar panels and the green roof on top of the conference building in the United Nations headquarters." PM Modi was also seated in the audience during UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's address.
