Chandrayaan-3 Launch LIVE: PM Modi lauds successful launch, says 'momentous achievement'

Chandrayaan-3 was launched today (July 14) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. India’s third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3 has three major objectives. One is to demonstrate safe landing on the surface of the moon, second is to demonstrate rover operations on the moon and the third to conduct in-situ scientific experiments on the lunar surface.

School children express their happiness on launch of Chandrayaan 3

School children who had arrived at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh expressed their delight following the successful launch of Chandrayaan 3 into orbit. 

"I feel very proud that our scientists and country are doing so good. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I will never get to witness something like this again," says a student Karan Tiwari 

"I feel very proud of my country. I am very happy and excited..," says another student, Snehal

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh spoke about the launch of Chandrayaan 3

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh spoke about the launch of Chandrayaan 3 and said, "We are statistically better from other countries, as other countries were not succeed in first attempt."

He added, "This mission is a tribute to the founding fathers of ISRO, Vikram Sarabhai." 

Singh said, "This mission is happening at a time when we are entering 25 years of Amrit Kaal. The entire mission is totally indigenous, living up to the mantra of Atmanirbhar Bharat."

In a major milestone in the Indian space trajectory that will go down as an unprecedented achievement in the country’s space history, the highly anticipated Chandrayaan-3 was successfully launched today (July 14) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh at 2.35 pm. As a follow-on to the Chandrayaan 2 launch on July 22, 2019, which successfully launched the orbiter, the Chandrayaan 3 is launched with the objective of doing a soft landing on the south pole of the lunar surface. CTTC Bhubaneswar that contributed to Chandrayaan-3 waits for launch, soft-landing

Technicians and students at the Central Tool Room and Training Center (CTTC) here are equally anxious to see the successful soft landing of the vehicle on the moon's surface. The members of the CTTC, Bhubaneswar, are anxious as this institute has supplied critical components for the mission. “We are anxious and feel like a student waiting for the examination results. We are highly optimistic that this time India would make history,” said L Rajasekhar, general manager of CTTC Bhubaneswar.

Objectives of the Chandrayaan-3 mission

Terrain Mapping Camera 2 (TMC 2): Miniature version of the Chandrayaan 1's camera, mapping lunar surface with high resolution.

Large Area Soft X-ray Spectrometer (CLASS): Measures X-ray fluorescence spectra to detect major elements on the Moon.

Solar X-ray Monitor (XSM): Observes and measures solar X-rays emitted by the Sun and its corona, supporting CLASS.

Chandrayaan 2 Atmospheric Compositional Explorer 2 (CHACE 2): Studies the composition and distribution of the lunar neutral exosphere.

Orbiter High-Resolution Camera (OHRC): Provides high-resolution images of the landing site for safe touchdown and scientific research.

Dual-Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR): Maps lunar surface in polar regions, estimates water-ice content and regolith thickness.

Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI): Measures distance between the spacecraft and the lunar surface using laser beams.

Dual Frequency Radio Science (DFRS): Studies the temporal evolution of electron density in the lunar ionosphere.

Imaging IR Spectrometer (IIRS): Maps Moon's mineralogical and volatile composition and characterises water/hydroxyl features.

Lander Payloads:

1. Radio Anatomy of Moon Bound Hypersensitive ionosphere and Atmosphere (RAMBHA) - Langmuir probe (LP) to measure plasma density.

2. Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) - Measure thermal properties of lunar surface.

3. Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) - Measure lunar seismicity and study crust and mantle structure.

4. Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA) - Passive experiment to study dynamics of the Moon system.

The lander is also generally box-shaped (200 x 200 x 116.6 cm), with four landing legs and four landing thrusters. It has a mass of 1749.86 kg,
