On seeking additional information and a request of the Chief Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against fugitive Mehul Choksi, wanted in a bank scam, as told to PTI by CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal.
Earlier, the Interpol had called for a Red Corner Notice on diamantaire, Nirav Modi in July, pertaining to the Punjab National Bank scam.
CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a charge-sheet against Choksi, who is accused in an economic bank fraud of $2 billion fraud, in a Mumbai court.
Choksi had left for the United States in January to seek medical treatment. On November 18, Choksi told the special court that he would travel to India if he was fit to do so.
His lawyer Sanjay Abbot made this submission on November 17 before special PMLA judge M S Azmi during the hearing of ED's plea to declare Choksi a fugitive under the new Fugitive Economic Offenders Act. "Presently he is not medically fit to travel. So his statement can either be recorded through video conferencing or ED officers can go to Antigua and record his statement or wait for three months if his conditions improve, he will come back to record his statement."
In October, Choksi had cited "health issues" to seek dismissal of the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) plea to declare him a "fugitive economic offender". In one of the ten applications filed before the court on October 30, Choksi had stated that he cannot take a "41-hour" flight to come to India due to a "brain clot" and other medical conditions.
Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are wanted by the ED and the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) for allegedly defrauding the PNB to the tune of Rs 13,400 crore in collusion with a few of its employees.
