The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) results have been announced on Friday, with ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) repeating its last year's fortune and dominating the polls. By winning three out of four posts in the elections, ABVP has turned out to be the clear winner in the elections. BJP-led ABVP won the posts of President, Vice President and Joint Secretary, while the Congress party-led NSUI (National Students' Union of India) turned out to be the winner of only one post - Secretary. As per news agency PTI, the counting of votes began after a delay of almost two hours as opposed to the scheduled timing of 8.30 am as the candidates turned up late.
Here are the winners:
- ABVP's Akshit Dahiya (President)
- ABVP's Pradeep Tanwar (Vice President)
- ABVP's Shivangi Kharwal (Joint Secretary)
- NSUI's Ashish Lamba (Secretary)
DUSU elections voter turnout
The Delhi University went to polls on Thursday with a voter turnout recorded at 39.90 per cent. While last year, the election saw a 44.46 per cent voter turnout, this year it was over four notches down. The polling for four positions (DUSU) ended amid allegations of EVM malfunctioning. Sixteen candidates, including 4 women, were in the fray and 52 polling centres were set up. In 2017, the overall voting percentage was 42.5 per cent while it was 36.9 per cent in 2016.
Election controversies
This year the DUSU elections witnessed multiple controversies from Savarkar bust being installed in the college campus to EVM malfunction. NSUI had alleged that EVM malfunctioning was against the Congress-backed student's wing, claiming that when a ballot is pressed for NSUI candidate, EVM did not light up to indicate registration of vote. However, an election committee member said the votes were being cast but there was some problem with the light that glows. It was also found that the candidates violated the model code of conduct by putting up huge hoardings, defacing college property and using printed material for seeking votes.
