Berhampur: In a tragic incident, at least 20 people including 18 children suffered injuries in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Sunday.

The incident took place when the children came in contact with a live electric wire while attending an event, which was organised for the inauguration of a temple at Phasiguda village under the jurisdiction of Digapahandi police station.

The injured children were immediately rushed to Digapahandi hospital and the four of them were later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur as their condition worsened.

The injured are undergoing treatment in the hospital and their condition is stated to be stable, a doctor said.

"The incident took place at Phasiguda village while the children, aged between 8 and 13 years, were playing on the stage amid rain after the performance, officials said. The officials also added that the two others were also injured when they tried to pull the children to safety.

Berhampur Sub-Collector Dheenat Dastangar said that she has asked the officials concerned to inquire into the cause of the incident. “Action would be taken against the persons found guilty,” she said.

Ramesh Chandra Sethi, the Additional SP (Berhampur), has said that the police will also conduct a separate inquiry into the incident.
