Ahmedabad: Gujarat has officially declared the Ghol fish as the state fish. The Ghol fish is commonly known as "Sea Gold" due to its significant medicinal properties. People in Asia highly value this fish for its health benefits, as it is rich in nutrients like iodine, omega-3, DHA, EPA, iron, taurine, magnesium, fluoride, and selenium. In Asia, all parts of the Ghol fish are used for medicinal purposes, drug production, cosmetics, and even making dissolvable stitches for surgeries.
The decision to declare the Ghol as the state fish was made during the Global Fisheries Conference, attended by more than 200 delegates. The Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, announced the Ghol Fish as the state fish. Purshottam Rupala highlighted the growing trend of states declaring their own state fishes and how it positively impacts the fishing sector through policy-driven governance.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that Gujarat, with the largest coastline in the country, has a significant number of fishermen and innovative stakeholders. Inclusive policies have led to the state's development, and the delegates at the conference are expected to contribute to the ongoing growth and development in the blue revolution.
The Ghol Fish, colloquially referred to as Sea Gold, is not always found near the water's surface due to pollution, forcing it into deep sea waters. This makes it challenging for fishermen to catch. Despite its elusive nature, the Ghol Fish commands a high price in international and overseas markets.
