The Delhi government has issued a new order on January 7 regarding Delhi schools being shut due to prevailing severe weather conditions.

Earlier, on January 6, the Delhi government had issued an order to extend the winter vacation of school children until January 10. However, hours later, the Department of Education retracted the order, saying that it was issued “by mistake”.
The department said that it will issue a new order notifying the extension of winter break in schools within the national capital region.
Schools to remain closed for Nursery to Class 5
Atishi Singh, Minister of Education, P.W.D, Culture and Tourism of Delhi, posted on X this morning informing about the new order for schools in Delhi.
“Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next 5 days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from Nursery to Class 5,” she posted.

Delhi cancels school winter vacation extension for higher classed
Schools in India normally have a winter vacation starting from Christmas and going on until New Year’s Day. However, due to the extreme cold wave in north India, the Delhi government had extended the winter holidays for schools until January 10. This order was issued for all government-aided and unaided recognised private schools of the national capital territory (NCT).
"Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further orders in this regard may be issued in due course," stated the updated order of the Delhi government.
The said order was cancelled and a new order for extension of winter holidays for Nursery to Class 5 was issued on January 7.
Extreme cold wave in Delhi NCR
Severe weather conditions, including fog and dipping temperature have prevailed throughout north India from December 2023. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ in Delhi, predicting light rainfall and cold weather for the next few days. The cold weather forecast continues for January 2024, affecting schools.
