Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde raises 'Malanggad' issue at religious gathering in Thane

Mumbai:  During a religious gathering in Thane, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the long-standing issue of Anand Dighe's quest to liberate "Malanggad." 

CM Shinde expressed his commitment to the cause, stating that he will not sit comfortably until the matter is resolved. He highlighted the Malang Gadmukti movement initiated by Dharamveer Anand Dighe Saheb years ago and assured that significant progress has been made under his leadership.

The Haji Malang Dargah holds significance for both Hindu and Muslim communities. Hereditary Trustee Member of Haji Malang Dargah, Advocate Chandrahas Ketkar, spoke to Republic TV, stating that the dispute over the religious site is longstanding. Anand Dighe's claim that the place belongs to the Nath sect was rejected by the Thane Court on January 13, 2023. Ketkar highlighted that the religious place falls under the Cosmopolitan Trust C category, registered in 1963, welcoming people of all religions.

Ketkar explained that the Supreme Court's 1954 judgment clarified that neither Hindu nor Muslim law would be applied at the Dargah. The worship tradition would remain the same, allowing followers of various faiths to visit. He recounted an incident in 1983 when Mohan Gokhale claimed the site to be the samadhi of Saint Machchindranath, leading to a legal battle.

The dispute escalated in 1953 when, under the court's scheme, only specific religious practices were allowed. However, contrary to the rules, aarti began to be forcibly conducted. Ketkar shared the challenges faced when seeking police intervention, leading to legal recourse.

Regarding CM Eknath Shinde's statement, Ketkar expressed concern that it might create conflict between communities. He highlighted the historical relationship between Haji Malang Baba and the Ketkar family, emphasizing their role as hereditary trustees since being declared by Peshwa Raja of Kalyan.

Ketkar clarified his religious identity, stating, "I am a Hindu but I follow the tradition set up by my ancestors. Whatever my family has achieved is because of Baba Haji Malang. We can't disobey him. I follow all Hindu traditions and gods, but I also follow Haji Malang Dargah. Following him doesn't make me Muslim."

Meanwhile, Jitendra Awhad, NCP leader and MLA from Thane, urged caution, emphasizing the need to preserve the harmony that has existed between Hindus and Muslims. Awhad cautioned against actions that could disturb peace, harmony, and religious unity in the region.
