Confirming the sanction of 1.23 lakh new houses, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri gave the credit to the 'positive leadership' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Last month, Puri had stated that the housing target would be met by 2020, almost two years before the official government deadline. PM Modi too had focused on the fact that India was building 'millions of homes for the poor and the middle classes' at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum on Wednesday. Furthermore, he urged foreign companies to invest in this sector.
10 states benefit
So far, West Bengal has got the highest chunk of approvals with 27,746 houses, followed by Tamil Nadu (26,709), Gujarat (20,903), Punjab (10,332), Chhattisgarh (10,079), Jharkhand (8,674), Madhya Pradesh (8,314), Karnataka (5,021), Rajasthan (2,822) and Uttarakhand (2,501).
