Gujarat coast to face strong winds due to Cyclone 'Hikaa': IMD

The India Meteorological Department has said that Cyclone 'Hikka' will cause strong winds along Gujarat coast but it is unlikely to come towards the state

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday has said that Cyclone 'Hikaa' will cause strong winds along Gujarat coast but it is unlikely to come towards the state. The IMD reports states that the cyclone will cause strong winds with speed reaching 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph along and off the Gujarat coast during next 12 hours which will decrease thereafter. Gujarat may only receive light to moderate rainfall. The cyclone is moving at a speed of about 17 kilometres an hour and is expected to make landfall in Oman on September 25 early in the morning. 

Cyclone Hikka

A depression off the Gujarat coast has deepened into a cyclonic storm named 'Hikaa' early on Monday morning. Late on Sunday, the national weather bureau said that satellite imagery and observations had detected a depression in the sea, located 150 km southwest of Veraval, Gujarat. It has forecasted that it would develop into a cyclone and move towards Oman over the next three days.

As on Monday at around 11.30 am, it is presently 500 km west­-southwest of Veraval, 430 km south-­southwest of Karachi, Pakistan and 760 km east­-southeast of Masirah, Oman. After intensifying for a 24-hour period, Cyclone Hikka will lose strength and gradually dissipate.

IMD Predictions

According to reports, the gale winds of 70-80 kmph are likely along its path in the Arabian Sea, at least until Wednesday. The fishermen are advised not to venture into east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian sea along and off Gujarat coast during next 48 hours. There is no extreme weather warning for the state.
