A road accident in Haryana claimed at least ten lives and left one injured on Tuesday night. The youths were returning home from an Army recruitment rally.

A road accident in Haryana claimed at least ten lives and left one injured on Tuesday night. Around 10.30 pm, The youths were returning home after participating in an Army recruitment rally when an oil tanker ran over their auto near Ramrai village. The auto travelled barely eight kilometers when the fateful accident took place on Jind-Hansi road. Five of the deceased hail from a single village.

"Two of three people have been identified. We have found documents from their bags and intimated their family members to verify their identity," DSP Kaptal Singh reportedly said. The injured are undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.

Road accidents in Haryana have seen a 6.7% decline in the first six months of 2019. This year, 2,537 fatalities were registered against 2,721 fatalities last year till June 30. In July, Haryana Vision Zero (HVZ) held a state road safety council meeting, revealed data that stated that 80% of the victims were pedestrians and 48% for two-wheeler riders. Haryana Police is looking to introduce more measures to curb accidents, such as applying neon pain to vehicles that have broken down on highways. Road safety experts said the final figures at year-end will be a true indicator of the decline in fatality rate as they increase during the winter months because of the weather conditions.
Analytical data reveals every hour 17 people die due to road accidents in India
As per the government data, almost 1.5 Lakh people lost their lives in road accidents in 2017, which means every hour 17 people died due to a road accident. According to a news report, more than 48,746 two-wheeler users died in road mishaps, of which 73.8 per cent of them did not wear a helmet. This means that every hour, four two-wheeler users died in a road accident, who did not wear a helmet.
