Hathras Stampede: Over 100 killed, mostly women and children, in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras after a stampede broke out during a religious event on Tuesday leading to a massive chaos in the district. The incident took place when a religious preacher was addressing his followers at a specially laid tent in the Rati Bhanpur village in the Sikandra Rau area, while his followers were trying to collect soil from his feet. As the rescue operation has been initiated at the spot, a tweet from the official X handle of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is doing rounds, wherein he is seen visiting the same Ashram in 2023.
The viral tweet claimed that Akhilesh Yadav visited the religious preacher, Narayan Saakar Hari’s ‘Satsang’ on January 3, 2023. After his visit to the religious event, he shared pictures from the event and applauded the Baba.
Akhilesh Yadav wrote on X, saying, “Narayan Saakar Hari ki sampurna brahmand me sada-sada ke liye jai-jaikar ho (May Narayan Saakar Hari be praised forever in the entire universe).”
After the incident, the police said that prima facie it appears that suffocation at the venue led to discomfort among the people attending the ‘Satsang’, who started running out from the site, causing a stampede. The injured have been admitted to Etah Medical College for treatment and the death toll is likely to rise as bodies were seen lying everywhere, the police said.
Hathras DM Ashish Kumar said, “District administration is investigating the matter. The injured are being taken to the hospital and people are still being recovered. A figure of nearly 50-60 deaths has been reported to me by the doctors. Permission for the event to be held was given by the SDM and it was a private event. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The primary focus of the administration is to provide all possible help to the injured and kin of the deceased.”
Meanwhile, reacting to the devastating news, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He stated, "The loss of life in the unfortunate accident in Hathras district is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved families."
