New Delhi, India: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Thursday that a victory for Donald Trump in the upcoming US presidential elections could “disrupt the world order” but emphasized that India could benefit from these disruptions, particularly in trade.

Jaishankar speaking in Sydney said that under the Trump administration, India expects cooperation and sees significant trade opportunities.

Trump, who is currently leading in the polls, would face Democratic rival Kamala Harris in a heated race for the presidency. Jaishankar’s comments underscored the geopolitical shifts that could result from Trump's policies, especially in areas of global trade and diplomacy.

Jaishankar is on an official visit to Australia from November 3-7, during which he met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra. The two leaders discussed ways to deepen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with Jaishankar conveying Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s warm greetings to Albanese.

Jaishankar also met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, where they discussed bilateral cooperation in education, technology, agriculture, and people-to-people ties. The ministers exchanged views on Indo-Pacific affairs and other global issues.

The visit also included interactions with leaders of the Australia-India Parliamentary Friendship Group and Australian Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton, focusing on strengthening political, economic, and strategic ties between the two countries.

In addition to his meetings in Australia, Jaishankar also met UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Canberra.

Following his time in Australia, Jaishankar is scheduled to travel to Singapore to address the 8th Roundtable of the ASEAN-India Network of Think Tanks and meet with Singaporean leadership to review bilateral relations.
