How India helped Maldives over the Years: From thwarting coups to aid during COVID
India has provided aid to Maldives over the years in various sectors including defence, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, and crucial infrastructure support.
New Delhi: India's relationship with the Maldives has been characterised by consistent support and aid, encompassing various sectors from defence to infrastructure development. From the early days of Maldives' independence to recent diplomatic fallout, India has remained an ally, extending assistance during both prosperous and challenging times.
Even when Maldivian officials turned hostile and brazenly shared derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Lakshadweep, and with the Maldives incumbent government's support to oust Indian military personnel posted in Maldives for training and supporting Maldivian security forces, India has upheld its commitment to support.
The Maldives economy heavily depends on tourism, with reports indicating that India contributes the most, followed by Russia and China. Hence the new trend of #BoycottMaldives and #ChaloLakshwadeep might severely damage the island nation’s economic growth, leading to empty 'exquisite' beaches and deserted luxury stays.
However, tourism isn't the only sector in which India has uplifted the Maldives.
Key initiatives by India that helped save Maldives
Recognising Maldives: India's support for Maldives dates back to the island nation's inception as an independent state in 1965. New Delhi was among the first countries to recognize its sovereignty and establish diplomatic ties. Over the years, this bond has evolved into a multifaceted partnership, with India consistently offering aid across crucial domains.
Operation Cactus: One significant instance of India's assistance occurred in 1988 when it swiftly intervened to help thwart a coup attempt orchestrated by Abdullah Luthufi. Under 'Operation Cactus,' India neutralised the coup backed by the Sri Lankan militant group Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding Maldives' stability and sovereignty.
Infra help: The collaborative efforts between India and Maldives extend beyond defence and security cooperation. India has proactively engaged in various developmental initiatives, illustrating a commitment to strengthen Maldives' infrastructure and societal well-being. Notable projects include the construction and renovation of crucial establishments like the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and the Maldives Institute of Technical Education, now known as Maldives Polytechnic, completed with Indian assistance of over Rs 12 crore in 1996.
Aid to the Island Nation: India has consistently offered financial support and aid packages to Maldives. During the presidency of Ibrahim Solih, India pledged a substantial assistance package of $1.4 billion, covering diverse sectors such as infrastructure development, financial aid, and bilateral cooperation agreements. This reinforced India's commitment to supporting Maldives' developmental priorities and encouraging a stronger partnership.
First country to receive Indian vaccines: The bilateral relationship extends beyond financial aid and infrastructure projects. India has played a pivotal role in bolstering Maldives' healthcare system, providing critical assistance such as vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. India's prompt provision of 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Maldives, followed by an additional consignment, facilitated one of the world's fastest vaccination drives, highlighting the depth of cooperation between the two nations.
Third largest trade partner: Trade ties have also flourished, with India becoming Maldives' third-largest trade partner. This partnership spans various sectors, including engineering, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and more, showcasing the diversification and growth of bilateral economic collaboration.
Training for Maldivian Security Forces: Indian forces have been stationed in Maldives since the coup attempt in 1988 to better train the Maldivian security forces with modern equipment and make them more potent in defending their island nation’s sovereignty. However, over the years, the Indian presence has decreased to around 77 in Maldives for the purpose of maintaining training and supporting the donated military helicopters and aircraft in use with Maldivian forces.
India's commitment to Maldives goes beyond mere geopolitical interests; it embodies a strong partnership grounded in mutual respect and support. From defence collaborations to infrastructure development and humanitarian aid, India's consistent efforts signify a stern dedication to assisting and uplifting the Maldivian nation.
However, with the current developments in the Maldivian political landscape and the India-phobic posts by the island nation’s now-suspended ministers, the situation looks bleak.
