New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association ( IMA ) on Wednesday condemned the recent stabbing of an on-duty government doctor in Chennai, demanding the government to implement stronger safety measures for healthcare professionals. In a statement, the IMA criticised the lack of security for doctors and called for immediate legislation to protect medical staff from violence.
The IMA’s letter highlighted the urgency of “deterrent legislation, exemplary punishments, and proactive safety measures” to ensure that doctors can work without fear.
The association expressed deep concerns over what it called “superficial damage control” by authorities and demanded swift action in response to the attack.
The letter stated, “The medical profession of the country is deeply disturbed and skeptical of the remedial measures on this ever-recurring violence.”
According to the IMA, such crimes should prompt all governments to prioritise the security of doctors and healthcare workers.
The organisation warned that only a comprehensive overhaul of hospital security could restore the confidence of medical professionals.
