Delhi Gears Up Security Ahead of Independence Day; Heavy Vehicle Entry Banned From Midnight
To bolster security, Delhi Police installed 700 AI-based facial recognition cameras across Central and New Delhi.
Independence Day 2024: With less than 24 hours left for the Independence Day celebration, Delhi Police has beefed up security arrangements across the city.
More than 10,000 police officers and 3,000 traffic personnel were deployed to ensure safety.
The heightened security included heavy police presence and sealing of all borders for commercial and heavy vehicles by Thursday midnight.
Borders Sealed to Prevent Unauthorized Entry
Officials confirmed that the national capital's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh were sealed from 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
This was aimed at restricting the entry of commercial vehicles into Delhi. Police set up checkpoints at all entry points to thoroughly inspect vehicles.
Advanced Surveillance Tools Deployed
To bolster security, Delhi Police installed 700 AI-based facial recognition cameras across Central and New Delhi.
These cameras were equipped with high-resolution pan-tilt-zoom features capable of identifying individuals from a distance.
Senior police officials indicated that these surveillance tools enhanced their ability to detect potential threats.
Security Forces Positioned in Key Areas
Alongside police officers, paramilitary forces were stationed at major points like the IGI Airport, metro stations, railway stations, malls, and markets.
The strategic placement of these units ensured increased vigilance across the city, particularly in high-traffic zones.
Red Fort: The Heart of the Security Plan
Over 3,000 traffic police officers were assigned to regulate movement around Red Fort, where the main Independence Day celebrations were held.
Security around Red Fort was especially stringent, with additional forces and elite SWAT commandos placed on high alert.
The use of snipers, sharpshooters, and kite catchers added further layers of protection for VIP attendees.
Special Technology and Snipers for VVIP Security
A smartphone-based application was used to verify the identities of those entering Red Fort. This ensured a seamless yet secure screening process for attendees.
Moreover, snipers and sharpshooters were deployed at key locations to safeguard the Prime Minister and other dignitaries present at the event.
Traffic Advisory and Flying Ban
In the days leading up to the event, the Delhi Police issued a traffic advisory, imposing restrictions on movement around the Red Fort area for security and convenience purposes.
Additionally, authorities reiterated the prohibition on the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms, including UAVs and hot air balloons, across the city until Thursday to maintain aerial security.
The extensive security measures underscored the authorities' commitment to ensuring a safe and smooth Independence Day celebration for all citizens and dignitaries in the national capital.
