Cong 'distorted' Constitution for self-interest: Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday slammed the Congress for claiming the BJP will change the country's Constitution.

Addressing a rally for BJP candidate Charansingh Thakur in Katol, he said it was the Congress which had "distorted" the Constitution for self-interest and had also imposed Emergency in 1975.

Maharashtra assembly polls will be held on November 20, while results will be announced on November 23.

"We will not change Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution nor will we allow anyone to do so. The basic structure of the Constitution cannot be changed," he said.

The minister also cited the Supreme Court judgment in the landmark Kesavananda Bharti case to buttress his point.

"The Constitution's salient features like freedom of speech, democracy, socialism, secularism as well as fundamental rights cannot be changed by anyone. Indira Gandhi during Emergency, distorted the Constitution. In the history of the country, it was Congress which did the sin of distorting the Constitution and they now blame us," Gadkari asserted.

Mahayuti to Win Assembly Polls with 'Huge Majority', CM Saini Hints at Haryana-like Victory

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the poor hold the first right to the country's resources and this was in sharp contrast to the Congress position that minorities should get priority in accessing them, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini said on Monday.

He predicated the BJP's spectacular victory in the just held Haryana assembly polls will be replicated in Maharashtra and the ruling Mahayuti coalition, of which the national saffron outfit is a constituent, will win the November 20 elections with a "huge majority".

Overcoming ten years of anti-incumbency, the BJP won a third straight term in Haryana by bagging 48 of the 90 assembly seats last month.

Addressing a press conference in Pune, the BJP leader, who took over as CM for a second term in October, accused the Congress of orchestrating the 2020-21 farmer agitation against the three contentious agriculture laws, which were later rolled back by the Centre.
