Jammu and Kashmir: Opposition creates ruckus in Rajya Sabha, chant 'band karo' as Amit Shah begins his statement

On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah gave a statement in the Rajya Sabha on Jammu and Kashmir proposing that the Article 370 be abrogated, while the Modi government also moved to bifurcate the north-most state into two union territories - J&K and Ladakh - the former getting a legislature and the latter being without. 

Opposition creates ruckus

Following the resolution to revoke Article 370 from J&K being moved by Home Minister Amit Shah, an uproar broke out in the Rajya Sabha.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu waived the rules of advance notice for speaking on the issue of J&K Reservation Bill. He said the bill and the situation in Kashmir will be discussed together. Ahead of Shah's speech, the Opposition tried to block his address.

The opposition had already raised a furore even before Amit Shah began his address, and there were several points when order had to be called for, despite VP Venkaiah Naidu asking them to refrain from moving away from their seats and appealing for down. 

PDP MPs proceeded to protest outside the Parliament and MM Fayaz along with Nazir Ahmed Laway tore a copy of the constitution following which Fayaz tore his clothes. 

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was also greeted with the opposition chanting 'band karo'. The members of the association caused commotion in the Rajya Sabha, banging the desks with their hands, screaming over each other and not allowing Home Minister Amit Shah to speak.

Article 370 to be revoked:

The Home Minister said that he proposed that the Modi government under the advisement of the President recommends the revocation of Article 370. He said that the Centre has brought four proposals pertaining to the state to the Parliament. He also moved a proposal to designate Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir as separate Union territories. J&K is proposed to have a legislature, while Ladakh is not. 

The historic and momentous moves follow days of suspense in the state, with additional troops being moved in, the Kashmiri parties banding together wither trying to quell or aid to the panic that had built in certain parts before they were placed under protective custody, and the Indian Army also proving the Pak Army's complicity in backing terror plots targeting Amarnath Yatris and other locations.
