Bengaluru: A government school teacher in Karnataka's Kalaburagi, was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape an 11-year-old schoolgirl in her classroom. The Karnataka police officials on Wednesday, confirmed the incident, saying that the incident occurred on Tuesday at a government school in Aland taluk, within the jurisdiction of Nimbarga police station. According to police, the victim, a class 5th student, had returned to her classroom after the midday meal when the teacher physically assaulted her.

Accused Threatened The Victim

The police sources claimed that the accused threatened the victim of dire consequences for making noise while attempting to rape her. However, when the girl resisted and started screaming for help, the accused teacher fled from the school premises. The victim later went to her home and narrated the ordeal to her parents, following which the parents immediately confronted the school headmaster over the incident and informed the police.

Based on the complaint filed by the parents of the victim, the Nimbarga police launched a manhunt and arrested the accused teacher. He has been charged under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Data Shows Surge In Rape Cases Against Minors

This incident has raised concerns in Kalaburagi district, which has seen a disturbing rise in cases of sexual offences against minors. In the past three years, rape cases against minors have tripled compared to those reported against adult women in the district.

A recent case of a 13-year-old gang rape victim, who tragically died in June, had already sparked protests in the region. Kalaburagi is the home district of Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, with his son, Minister for RDPR, IT and BT Priyank Kharge, serving as the district minister. The incident also comes just days after a doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, which shocked the nation.
