Kashmir Shuts Primary Schools for 2 Days Amid Severe Heatwave

New Delhi: The divisional administration of Kashmir has ordered the suspension of all classes for students up to the primary level due to the persistent heat wave in the region. 

This order, issued by Divisional Commissioner V.K. Bidhuri, was announced on Sunday. Schools will remain closed on July 29 and 30.

However, the teaching staff is required to continue fulfilling their duties and attend school as usual, as stated in the official order.

In the order, V.K. Bidhuri mentioned, “Due to the ongoing heat wave in the valley, classes for students up to the primary level in both government and recognized private schools will be suspended on July 29th and 30th, 2024..”

"However, all teaching and non-teaching staff shall continue to attend to their duties as usual," the notice further stated.

Severe Heatwave Conditions in Kashmir 

Meanwhile, in the South Kashmiri region of Anantnag, residents are seeking relief from the intense summer heat by cooling off in local ponds and canals. As temperatures rise, families and friends gather at these natural retreats to escape the scorching sun. Children splash and play, while adults wade in the refreshing waters, enjoying a much-needed respite from the heat.

Speaking to ANI, a resident of the area commented on the effects of global warming. "This year it's been very hot... Here it's been 33 degrees recently; we've really suffered due to the heat. Children and women can't come out because of the heat. I think there should be another summer vacation. Because of global warming, people move to streams and ponds for relief," he said.
