'Fell At Their Feet, Begged Them...': Abhaya's Mother On Knowing About Daughter's Death
Mother of the Kolkata Rape and Murder victim 'Abhaya' recounts moments when she came to know about her daughter's death and how she 'fell at their feet'.

Kolkata: The gruesome murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has shocked the entire nation.
The mother of ‘Abhaya’ has told the media that initially, she was not even allowed to see her daughter.
'Fell At Their Feet, Begged Them...': Abhaya's Mother
Abhaya's mother revealed to the media that as soon as she was informed about her daughter's death, she fell on their feet, begged the authorities to let her see her daughter, but they did not allow.
In her words, “I fell at their feet, begging them to let me see my daughter. But they did not. No one understands what I went through. They let us see her at 2 pm.”
Another relative of the deceased trainee doctor said that the family was planning her wedding next year.
Kolkata Horror: What Happened to ‘Abhaya’?
In the early hours of August 9, a trainee doctor's body was found in a semi-naked condition in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
As per the autopsy reports, the victim was raped before being murdered, her neck was broken, multiple body parts including her private parts were bleeding and she was severely injured.
The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic worker, has been arrested and is in police custody till August 23, 2024. Sanjoy Roy has confessed to his crime and according to local media, he has no remorse or guilt for committing the heinous crime.
After his arrest, he said to the police officials, “Hang me if you want.”
Massive Protests Across India, Hospital Services Affected
Doctors and non-medicos have raised their voice against this chilling murder and the incident has also led to questions of women security at all times, even at their workplace.
The medical students have called for nationwide protests and doctors have also halted medical services across the country, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kolkata.
Women in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal will be taking to the streets for a midnight protest, against the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the state capital.
The midnight protest will begin at 11:55 pm on August 14, on the eve of India's 78th Independence Day. The protest titled ‘Night is Ours’ is being described as ‘for women's independence on the midnight of independence'.
