Kolkata Horror: CBI Speaks To Murdered Doctor's Family, Grills Hospital Officials

CBI officers on Thursday visited the residence of the doctor who was raped and murdered at a Kolkata hospital, and spoke to her parents as a part of their investigation, an official said.

The investigators took note of the time they received the call from the hospital, informing them about the death of their daughter, he said.

The officers also asked them about their daughter's friends, and whether she complained of any problems at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where she was a postgraduate trainee doctor, he added.

Kolkata Metro Railway on Thursday announced it would run normal services on August 16 when a 12-hour general strike has been called by SUCI (C) party.

After the brutal crime in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and the hooliganism unleashed on the protesting students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association declares nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine from 6 am on Saturday i.e 17th of August to 6 am Sunday 18th of August, for 24 hours. 

All essential services will be maintained. Casualties will be manned. Routine OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be conducted. The withdrawal is across all the sectors wherever modern medicine doctors are providing service. IMA requires the sympathy of the nation with the just cause of its doctors, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said.

The horrific rape and murder of a young doctor on the premises of RG Kar Hospital on the morning of August 9 has shocked us all. It is absolutely insane that a young girl goes to her workplace and after her 36-hour shift, goes to rest in a room and is brutally raped and murdered. Was it to destroy any evidence? Was it to save someone or to implicate someone, these things are a matter of investigation... I am surprised that where there is a woman Chief Minister, such an incident happens and she is silent, all her women MPs are silent... This incident is reprehensible and shameful, what all the doctors there are saying should be heard... This is not just a matter related to one area, it is a matter of women's safety on which every government needs to work sensitively,” Union Minister Chirag Paswan said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that the Left and the Ram want to create an unrest in West Bengal. Her statement comes as doctors, medical students, and others from the medical fraternity continue to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

"As far as the information I have, I will not blame the students... The incident is very unfortunate, we still say that they should be hung... We have given all the documents, till the time our police were investigating, nothing was leaked... My and the people of Bengal's condolences are with the victim's family... This is a very big crime, and the only punishment for it is that the accused should be hung, if the culprit is hanged then only people will learn a lesson from it but no innocent should be punished...," said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

CBI investigation in connection with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case is underway. Some doctors and hospital staff were seen called in for questioning as part of the investigation process.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared OPD shutdown from 6 am to 6 pm on Saturday across India for all hospitals and clinics.

CBI Special Crime Branch in Kolkata has summoned five Doctors for interrogation in connection with the trainee doctor's rape and murder case.

Suspended MSVP Sanjay Vashisth, HOD Chest Dept Arunava Dutta Choudhary, Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine Rina Das, Molly Banerjee and Apurba Biswas from Forensic Medicine Department were summoned by CBI.

At least nine people have been arrested after violence erupted at the RG Kar Hospital amid CBI investigation into the rape and murder case of a trainee Kolkata doctor. 

Talking to the media, a CBI official said, "Investigation is going on. We have taken statements of the parents."

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal writes to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in the recent RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case.

Maliwal said, "...Didi, as the only woman Chief Minister in the country, many of us had higher hopes for you. You have been lauded for fielding a higher number of women candidates in elections, with several women now holding seats as Members of Parliament. Yet, in this case, the actions of your government, from the disturbing attempts to cover up this heinous crime to the rewarding of those involved in the negligence, and the silence from your party, have revealed a sickening politicization of rape. This is a dangerous trend for Indian democracy. Similar failures in handling cases of sexual violence have been witnessed in West Bengal before, and your government’s repeated silence and deflections continue to raise serious concerns."

"Today, as our great nation celebrates Independence Day, a day meant to symbolize freedom, justice, and equality for all, I find myself grappling with a profound sense of despair. How can we truly celebrate when the very fabric of our society is torn by such unspeakable acts of brutality? How can we rejoice in our independence when the women of our country are not free from the fear of rape and murder? This horrific crime casts a dark shadow over our celebrations. At this very moment, protests are erupting across the country, with doctors, nurses, and other citizens voicing their anguish and outrage. If those in positions of power fail to protect the women and children of this nation and are seen instead siding with the accused, what hope do we have for the future? she added.

"I implore you, Didi, to rise above the constraints of political expediency and lead, by example. Ensure that the severest punishments are meted out to the perpetrators of crimes against women and children. Further, I request you to ensure full cooperation to the CBI, so that proper investigation is done in the matter and justice is meted out to the family. The Government must also fix accountability of those in power, who tried to cover up the matter and save the accused. Most importantly, I urge you to make protecting the women of West Bengal and this country your utmost priority. The eyes of the nation are upon you, and history will remember how you respond to this moment of crisis," the letter reads further.

On Thursday afternoon, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose said that he wrote a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the 13th, requesting her attention to several matters:

- A CBI investigation should be conducted.
- The security of women doctors and nurses should be ensured.
- Security staff should be appointed according to their capabilities.

Responding to his requests, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated, "We have taken sufficient action. The CBI investigation is being conducted on the instructions of the High Court."

Republic World managed to access a video showing unidentified individuals vandalising sections of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of a female doctor was found last week.

The footage showed the miscreants wielding iron rods as they inflicted damage on the hospital. The incident took place amid midnight protests by women against the horrific rape murder of the doctor at the hospital. 

According to the police, a group of nearly 40 people, allegedly disguised as protestors, entered the hospital premises, vandalised property and pelted stones at police personnel prompting them to fire teargas to disperse the mob. 

The Bharatiya Janata Party has organised a statewide protest tomorrow in Bengal and called a bandh. The All India BJP Mahila Morcha chief will hold a candlelight march from the Hazra to CM Mamata Banerjee’s residence, meanwhile, BJP leader Sukanto Majumdar will hold a sit-in protest.

While interacting with protesters at the medical college, Guv Ananda Bose asserted that he supports the doctors in this fight. He said, ""You will get justice. I have come here to listen to you personally. We will fight it out and we will win. We are with you. I will devote myself to your service."
