Kolkata Rape Case: Mamata’s Ultimatum To CBI, Says ‘End Probe By August 18’
The TMC chief, has scheduled a rally from Moulali to Dharmtala in Kolkata on August 17, asserting, “I want the accused to be hanged."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Wednesday a planned protest to demand justice for a Kolkata trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar College and Hospital. Banerjee, urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which recently took over the probe from Kolkata Police, to ensure justice by next Sunday.
The TMC chief, has scheduled a rally from Moulali to Dharmtala in Kolkata on August 17, asserting, “I want the accused to be hanged. I hope the CBI will give justice within next Sunday.”
On August 12, Banerjee had warned that the CBI would assume control of the case if the local police failed to resolve it by August 18. Her directive came in response to public outcry and the victim's family’s plea for an independent investigation. Subsequently, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case to the CBI on Tuesday.
Addressing a party event, Banerjee criticized opposition parties, BJP and CPI(M), for allegedly politicizing the issue. She stated, “What have we not done? What action did we not take? As soon as I learned of the incident, I spoke to the police commissioner and the victim's parents.”
Banerjee accused the CPI(M) and BJP of engaging in “cheap politics” rather than supporting the victim’s family and accused them of attempting to undermine her government. She added, “They think they can create a situation like Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power.”
