The CBI will conduct a psychological assessment of Sanjay Roy, the accused in a rape-and-murder case of a doctor in Kolkata that has triggered nationwide protests, officials said on Saturday.A team of psychological and behavioural analysts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has arrived in Kolkata to conduct the necessary tests, they said.

Siddaramaiah, 76, firmly ruled out his resignation--both before and after a specially convened meeting of the state Cabinet--and said he has done no wrong to quit after the governor's move in the alleged corruption case dealt a big jolt to the nearly 15-month-old Congress government.

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, after meeting with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, claimed that the central government is plotting to destabilize the state’s leadership. In response, Shivakumar announced that silent protests are being held across all districts, with strict instructions for participants to maintain peace.

Shivakumar emphasized the importance of vigilance during these protests, warning that miscreants could provoke violence. He reiterated that the protests were a show of solidarity with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Congress leadership has been briefed on what he describes as a "BJP conspiracy," and the party is prepared to take legal action, with plans to approach the court on Monday.

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday accorded sanction for the prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment 'scam’, giving a major jolt to the nearly 15-month-old Congress government.

Hours later, the Karnataka Cabinet, at a specially convened meeting this evening under the leadership of Siddaramaiah, condemned the Governor's decision, termed it as "politically motivated", and vowed to wage a legal fight.

Following the backing of the cabinet and the party, the Chief Minister questioned as to why he should resign, and said the Governor has to quit, because he acted like a "puppet" in the hands of the Government of India.

The BJP MP Lahar Singh Siroya on Saturday said the MUDA scam is a personal allegation against Siddaramaiah and he should fight it as an individual and not as the Karnataka Chief Minister.

In a post on ‘X’, Siroya asked the Chief Minister not to involve the state machinery.

“The #MUDAScam is a purely personal allegation against Shri @siddaramaiah, his wife and family. It is about private land they own. He should fight it as an individual, not as CM by involving the state government machinery. Am sure CM knows the difference," the BJP Rajya Sabha member said.

The Karnataka Cabinet on Saturday condemned the Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot's decision to grant sanction for the prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment 'scam'.

Terming the Governor's action as "politically motivated", Siddarmaiah said: "We will wage a legal fight." "The Cabinet has condemned the Governor's decision to sanction prosecution against me as illegal and anti-Constitution", the Chief Minister told a press conference after a special Cabinet meeting.

“Governor should act as representatives of the Constitution. They should not work as representatives of the central government,” Karnataka CM said after Governor Gehlot sanctioned prosecution against former in MUDA scam case. 

“They (BJP) are trying to destabilise the government. We have issued all the guarantees that the BJP-JD(S) are doing this. They were against guarantees. Both the Prime Minister and Amit Shah were against the guarantee,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said at a press conference on Saturday. 

“The decision taken by the Governor is illegal. An unconstitutional decision. And the entire cabinet has said that it is illegal. Therefore, the entire Cabinet has condemned it. It has no legal force,” Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said at a press conference.

The BJP in Karnataka on Saturday demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying he has no moral right to stay in power after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot granted permission to prosecute him in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment 'scam'.

The party, along with its NDA partner JD(S), had taken out a foot march from Bengaluru to Mysuru from August 3 to 10 targeting Siddarmaiah over the 'scam'.

There is no case against me, and the Governor's decision is unconstitutional. We will challenge this illegal sanction in the court of law. From the very day the complaint was filed against me, a show-cause notice was issued. This move by the Governor was anticipated.

The situation in Nashik is now under control after violence broke out yesterday during the protest march over the Bangladesh issue. 

 The Agwanani Bridge, which is currently under construction and intended to connect Bhagalpur and Khagaria, has collapsed for the third time this Saturday.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) Inquiry Committee identified lapses in security, infrastructure, and investigation concerning the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata last week.  The NCW has alleged that the site (RG Kar Medical College) in Kolkata where the post-graduate trainee doctor was reportedly raped and murdered was abruptly renovated, raising concerns about evidence tampering. The commission noted that the crime scene should have been immediately sealed by the police. The hospital was also found to lack basic amenities for female medical staff, including poorly maintained washrooms, inadequate lighting, and a complete absence of security measures.

The Madhya Pradesh high court on Friday issued notices to the state government and others seeking their reply in 24 hours on the strike called by doctors on august 17 to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a woman medic at a Kolkata hospital and vandalization of the health facility .

After the derailment of at least 22 coaches of the Sabarmati Express (train number 19168) early Saturday near Govindpuri Station in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the driver has disclosed the cause of the accident.

According to the train's driver, a boulder hit the engine leading to the derailment of the train. This impact caused significant damage to the engine’s cattle guard. Meanwhile, The Indian Railways is currently investigating the incident
