As of March 2024, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MAHADISCOM) is grappling with a staggering Rs 89,321 crore in pending bills, according to a written reply by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the state Assembly. This massive amount is owed by approximately 1.55 crore consumers across the state.

Breaking down the figures, Rs 58,776 crore constitutes the principal amount of the pending bills, while the remaining Rs 30,545 crore accounts for the interest accrued on these unpaid bills. This alarming financial burden reflects the significant challenge MAHADISCOM faces in revenue collection.

In the same month due to the non-payment of Rs 89,321 crore in pending bills, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) launched a campaign to discontinue electricity supply to defaulting consumers. Electricity will not be reconnected until the pending amount and additional GST on the reconnection fee are paid, as clarified by MSEDCL.

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has set the reconnection fees: Rs 210 for single-phase and Rs 420 for three-phase connections in the low tariff category, and Rs 310 for single-phase and Rs 520 for three-phase connections in the high tariff category, plus 18% GST.

Pune Regional Manager, Mr. Ankush Nale, stated that 44,972 consumers in Western Maharashtra have had their supply disconnected in the past month due to pending bills. This includes 29,440 in Pune, 3,258 in Satara, 6,154 in Solapur, 3,062 in Kolhapur, and 3,058 in Sangli.

MSEDCL urges consumers to promptly pay their bills via the online portal at www.mahadiscom.in, the MSEDCL mobile app, or through RTGS/NEFT for bills exceeding Rs 5,000 to prevent further disconnections.
