After the recent implementation of Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019, a man in Aligarh alleged he was issued Rs 500 e-challan for driving a car without a helmet by Uttar Pradesh police. Piyush Varshney reportedly received a message on his phone and since then, he wears a helmet in his four-wheeler to avoid fine. The police reportedly claimed the situation can be rectified and the challan canceled in case of wrong verification number.

Fined for driving a four-wheeler without helmet 

According to a news agency, the man was issued e-challan driving a four-wheeler without a helmet. He said, "Due to fear of getting challan again, I am wearing a helmet while driving the car. On challan issued, there was my car number," he said. The Superintendent of Police,Traffic, Ajijul Haq reportedly said the e-challan was being rectified and the challan will be canceled, if found wrong.

After the amended Act, many people have received hefty fines due to traffic violations. A Gurugram man was fined Rs 23,000 for a traffic violation. The man, Dinesh Madan was caught on account of driving without a helmet, absence of a license, insurance papers and pollution card. An Odisha man was also issued a fine of Rs 86,500 for several violations such as overloading, driving without a license, carrying dimension projects and a general offense under the newly implemented Motor Vehicle Act.

Heftier fine for future traffic violations

The Motor Vehicle (Amendment Bill) Act 2019 was implemented on September 1 aimed at tightening road safety, curbing corruption and road accidents. This new upgrade into a 30-year old law comes with stricter regulations and heftier fines for offenses such as drunk driving, over-speeding, over-crowding, driving without a helmet or a license. If a person driving without a license was fined Rs 500 earlier, will now be fined Rs 5,000 under the new provision and absence of helmet up to Rs 1,000 or disqualification of license for three months. Drunk driving also carries a hefty Rs 10,000 fine for second offense or imprisonment up to 2 years.
