MASSIVE CONTROVERSY: Insensitive to 73-year-old question mark, Rahul Gandhi puts date-of-death in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose tribute; triggers furore

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday courted massive controversy while paying tribute to one of India's leading freedom fighters, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, on his 122nd birth anniversary.

The furore was sparked by the Congress president taking to Twitter to pay his respects to Netaji Bose, and in the process of doing so, in his social media post, also fixing the date of his passing away, causing the Bose family to seek an immediate apology.

Chandra Kumar Bose, the grand nephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, slammed Rahul Gandhi for so casually, especially given the family he hails from, writing a date-of-death, and accused him of distorting history.

The fate of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has essentially been undeterminable since 1945, when his Japanese plane is said to have crashed in present-day Taiwan. A number of commissions have been constituted since then, including as recently as in 2005, as well as by Japan, though a vast proportion of those commission reports either remain classified or were inconclusive. Members of his family, over the years, have been persistent about files concerning Netaji's fate to be declassified. 

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was one of the leading figures when it came to helping India gain independence from British rule in 1947. He was also the President of Indian National Congress between 1938 and 1939, and founded the first Azad Hind Sarkar as well as the Azad Hind Fauj, which is noted to have played a huge role in not only heralding the British Raj in India, but British colonialism across the world.

On his 122th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him by inaugurating the Subhash Chandra Bose museum at the iconic Red Fort in the National Capital. The Prime Minister also took to Twitter to express his gratitude to Netaji for his service to the nation.
