The following is the press note detailing three key decisions that have been made regarding the Coronavirus outbreak by the central government that imposes key lockdowns.

These are the three major decisions entailed herein:

  • The 75 districts in India with confirmed Coronavirus cases have been placed under lockdown till March 31.
  • All passenger train services have been suspended till March 31. Only goods trains will ply.
  • Inter-state passenger transport will also be suspended till March 31, 2020

A high level meeting was held on Sunday morning with Chief Secretaries of all the States by the Cabinet Secretary and the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and the decision was made. All the Chief Secretaries informed that there is overwhelming and spontaneous response to the 'Janta Curfew' call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The railways had already trimmed down its services on Friday by cancelling a majority of trains. However, it had allowed all trains that had already started the journey to continue. India on Sunday is witnessing an unprecedented shutdown following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for a 'Janta Curfew'. The 'Janata Curfew' got underway at 7 am and will continue till 9 pm. 

Punjab has become the fifth states to announce a lockdown till March 31, following similar announcements by Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Bihar.

India fights COVID-19

"Under this Janata (public) curfew, no one should leave their home or gather in their neighbourhoods. Only those related to essential services should go out," PM Modi said in his address to the nation on Thursday. There are 341 active coronavirus cases, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Sunday. The death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic in India has gone up to six with two fatalities being reported in Maharashtra and Bihar.
