Mumbai Rains: Red Alert Issued For Tomorrow; NDRF Deployed in Several Areas

New Delhi: Monsoons have arrived and while the residents of northern states of India are enjoying the change in weather as it is a respite from the scorching heat, several states of India are struggling with flood-like situations including Gujarat and north-eastern states of Assam and Mizoram among others.

The Mumbai Rains have brought the financial capital of India to a standstill as several local trains are delayed and cancelled, streets are waterlogged causing severe traffic jams and flight services are also disrupted. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rain in certain districts of Maharashtra.

• BMC declares holiday for schools in Mumbai tomorrow 

The decision has been taken in view of the heavy rain warning issued by IMD, said BMC

• Schools to remain shut in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Raigad tomorrow 

In view of the heavy rainfall prediction, administration has decided that schools will remain close in Navi Mumbai and nearby areas. 

• IMD issues Red Alert for Mumbai, Nearby areas

Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Mumbai and nearby regions till tomorrow morning, the Met Department said. 

• “Come out of Homes only if necessary”: CM Eknath Shinde appeals

“In the wake of heavy rains in Mumbai, the situation in the city was reviewed by visiting the control room of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation today…appealed to the citizens to come out of their homes only if necessary,” Chief Minister Shinde said. 

• No long-distance mail express trains were rescheduled or cancelled: Western Railway

“The high-capacity pumps installed at the stations in Mumbai were immediately put in service with staff monitoring the situation at all vulnerable locations. Due to these efforts, the train services could be run throughout the day without any interruption on any of the lines,” Western Railway said.

• Rainfall intensity likely to reduce by tomorrow: IMD

IMD Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble said that a total of 270 mm of rains have been recorded in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as of now. “Rainfall intensity will continue till tomorrow morning, afterwards, its impact will decrease,” said Met Department.    

• Step out only if necessary: Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Devendra Fadnavis said that administration is closely monitoring the situation.   

• National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed its teams in several parts of the city.

The teams have been deployed in Thane, Vasai ( Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sindhudurg.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and Heavy to very Heavy rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in districts of Raigad, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai.

No one was hurt in the incident that took place at 1:25pm in Lokmanya Nagar Pada number 4, said Thane Municipal Corporation regional disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Monday, told ANI, "Traffic has resumed on all roads. Senior BMC officials are present at all waterlogging-prone spots in the city. The State Disaster Management Authority, NDRF, and BMC are on alert. Traffic is running on Eastern and Western highways and all railway lines. NDRF teams have reached all three coastal districts in the state. Army, Navy and Air Force are also on alert."
 

• Orange Alert in Maharashtra Districts

IMD has issued an orange alert in parts of central Maharashtra including Thane and Raigad districts.

• Mumbai Rains Delay Local Trains

According to Central Railway, heavy rainfall the Maharashtra capital has resulted in waterlogging due to which the Mumbai Suburban & Harbour Line train traffic has been delayed. The affected stations are Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Kurla- Vikhroli & Bhandup.

The weather department has also issued a red alert for July 7 in Uttarakhand, predicting very heavy rainfall in almost all parts of the state.

In order to avoid inconvenience to students, a holiday for the first session is declared for all BMC, Government and Private schools and colleges in Mumbai (BMC area). The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai. Additionally, at 1:57 pm. today, there will be a 4.40m. high tide in the sea.

“More than 300 millimeters of rain has been recorded at different places in the six-hour period from midnight yesterday to 7 am today. Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas and suburban rail services have also been disrupted,” said BMC.

Mumbai Airport has issued an advisory which states, “Today heavy rains and low visibility led to the suspension of runway operations from 2:22 am to 3:40 am. 27 flight diversions were reported. Flights diverted to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Indore, etc. Currently, priority is being given to arrivals, delaying departures, and consequential changes that were made to accommodate diverted flights.”
