President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday condoled the demise of famous folk singer Sharda Sinha and said that her melodious singing will remain immortal. Sinha, who was undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, died on Tuesday night. She was 72.

The ruling BJP and opposition BJD engaged in a war of words over cracks appearing on 'Meghanad Pacheri' or outer boundary wall of Puri's Jagannath temple.The ruling BJP and the Odisha government claimed that the cracks appeared due to construction activities carried out during the heritage corridor project by the previous BJD regime.

In a post on X, he noted that her folk songs in Maithili and Bhojpuri were extremely popular. Her songs on Chhath, a grand festival of faith, will echo forever, he added, conveying his condolences to her family members and admirers.

The chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Jagdambika Pal, will visit Karnataka on Thursday to meet farmers protesting against notices, now withdrawn, served to some of them for allegedly encroaching on Waqf properties.

He is also likely to meet others, including a host of Karnataka BJP leaders, who have launched a stir over the issue.

Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday alleged that women were not safe in Jharkhand as the law and order situation in the state has crumbled but the Hemant Soren government was "sleeping."     

He accused the coalition government of looting the state and destroying it in the past five years.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he is fully committed to ensuring caste census in Telangana and in making the state a model for caste census in the country.

The majority judgement of the Supreme Court on Tuesday on the private properties issue criticised former apex court judge V R Krishna Iyer for "postulating a rigid economic theory" that advocated for greater state control over private resources as an exclusive basis for constitutional governance.

Opposition members in the parliamentary committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday to register their protest against alleged "unilateral" decisions by panel chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal. The members had claimed they were "stonewalled" during the committee's proceedings and had also indicated that they may even dissociate from the panel, as they objected to the manner in which Pal was functioning including on fixing the dates of sittings, which were at times for three consecutive days.

"In Centre, UP, Haryana and Rajasthan, there are BJP governments. They don't know how to do something other than politics. All the governments of the Northern States will have to work together. The Delhi government is working day and night and the BJP government is sitting silently. This gap needs to be filled," Gopal Rai told ANI.

Another incident of temple vandalism has been reported in Hyderabad where unidentified miscreants allegedly damaged idols of deities at a temple in Airport Colony, Shamshabad, on Tuesday.

The incident came to light when the priest arrived for daily rituals and discovered several idols had been desecrated. Police arrived at the scene upon receiving information and are investigating the site.
