Mumbai Rains LIVE: Schools, Jr Colleges shut amid heavy rain forecast
As India's financial is hit by heavy rainfall on Thursday, Maharashtra state government has declared a holiday for schools and junior colleges in Mumbai and other neighbouring districts, as shared by the Mumbai police. The police also shared the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)'s prediction of very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and adjoining areas for next 2 days. Subsequently, a red alert has been issued in isolated areas across Mumbai & MMR regions for Thursday.

Skymet predicts 'heavy to very heavy' rains next two days
According to Skymet, Mumbai is set to receive even heavier showers on September 19 and 20. Rains have already been lashing the city since Wednesday night. Lightning strikes were too reported in various areas of the city. Skymet reports that in the past 21 hours, Mumbai has witnessed 69 mm of rains as observed by the Santacruz observatory. Throughout Wednesday night, the observatory has witnessed more than 50 mm of rains.
Skymet has predicted waterlogging, traffic chaos in the next two days as very heavy rainfall will continue to lash the city. In view of the state government declaring a public holiday, schools and colleges will remain closed on Thursday in Mumbai, Thane, and Konkan region, reports Skymet.
Mumbai rains 2019
Mumbai has seen unprecedented rains this monsoon season. Reports state that the financial capital has received the highest rainfall in the past 65 years, this year. With 3,452 mm rainfall in the year 1954, this year, Mumbai has received over 3,475 mm from June 1 to September 17. The highest rainfall recorded in a single day was 944mm on July 26, 2005. Usually, the city gets southwest monsoon rains beginning June to September-end with peak rains occurring in July, but this has extended to September this year.
