Delhi Govt Bans BS-III Petrol, BS-IV Diesel Vehicles To Combat Air Pollution

New Delhi: Following the directives of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Delhi government announced a ban on the operation of old BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel light motor vehicles (LMVs) within the city. Additionally, diesel-operated medium goods vehicles (MGVs) and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) registered outside Delhi, with emission standards of BS-III or below, are prohibited from entering Delhi, except for those transporting essential commodities or providing essential services. According to the officials, Delhi's worsening air quality has reached severe levels, prompting the government to take measures to reduce pollution. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has directed the Delhi government to ban the operation of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel light motor vehicles within the city. Additionally, diesel-operated medium goods vehicles and light commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi with emission standards of BS-III or below are prohibited from entering Delhi, except for those transporting essential commodities or providing essential services.The government has also enforced Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes halting private construction and demolition activities and announcing staggered office timings for smoother traffic flow. Furthermore, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has announced additional public transport measures, including 106 shuttle buses to facilitate commuting, 60 extra trips by the Delhi Metro daily, and 40 dedicated shuttle buses for government officials to discourage private vehicle use.Violators of the vehicle ban will face fines of Rs 20,000, and 84 enforcement teams and 280 additional personnel will monitor compliance. Additionally, classes up to Grade 5 will transition to online learning starting next week, and private schools will adapt using smart boards and apps. The Delhi government has taken these measures to reduce pollution and improve air quality, which remains a significant concern for the health and well-being of residents.
