In a massive development in the INX Media case, former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday has been to judicial custody at the Tihar jail till September 19 by the Rouse Avenue Court. P Chidambaram has been sent to 14-days judicial custody and will be lodged in Jail No 7 at the Tihar. This development has come shortly after the Congress leader was denied pre-arrest bail by the Supreme Court in the INX Media money laundering case. As per sources, the Home Minister has moved an application in the court for a seperate cell with a cot and a bathroom, along with a western toilet. He has also called for Z security in the Tihar Jail.

Chidambaram's demands

P Chidambaram has also called to be kept in the same jail cell where his son Karti was kept. The Rouse Avenue Court has accepted the application of the Congress leader to provide separate cell to him with adequate security. Meanwhile, P Chidambaram's lawyers have also moved an application in Court stating that the former Finance Minister wants to surrender to the Enforcement Directorate in the INX Media case. Responding to the application, the Court has issued a notice to the ED, seeking their reply. Next hearing on P Chidambaram's surrender plea will take place on September 12.

SC dismisses Chidambaram's bail plea

Earlier on Thursday, the top court dismissed Chidambaram's plea challenging the Delhi High Court verdict denying him anticipatory bail in the INX Media case. An SC bench of Justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna said that P Chidambaram's case is not fit to grant anticipatory bail. The top court also maintained that protection from arrest to Chidambaram at this point will only hamper the investigation of the Enforcement Directorate. The apex court, however, said Chidambaram can approach the court concerned for grant of regular bail in the case.
