On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a special opinion piece for the New York Times. The Opinion column by PM Modi discussed Mahatma Gandhi's impact on the world.

PM Modi quoted Gandhi's words about Nationalism in his Young India journal.

"In 1925, Gandhi wrote in "Young India”: “It is impossible for one to be internationalist without being a nationalist. Internationalism is possible only when nationalism becomes a fact, i.e., when peoples belonging to different countries have organized themselves and are able to act as one man.”

The Prime Minister in his column described Mahatma Gandhi's view on Indian nationalism as one that was never narrow or exclusive but one that worked for the service of humanity. PM Modi also wrote about Mahatma Gandhi's ability to combine ordinary objects with mass politics, in a way that it would leave an impact.

"Who else could have used a charkha, a spinning wheel, and khadi, Indian homespun cloth, as symbols of economic self-reliance and empowerment for a nation?" he wrote.
