Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Dr Jitendra Singh took to Twitter to announce an auction of PM Modi's gifts for the 'Namami Gange' project on Saturday. The e-auction aims to generate funds for conserving and maintaining river Ganga. The auction will be open from September 14 to October 3 where buyers can choose from the over 2,700 gifts given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dr Jitendra Singh also informed about the e-auction being available on the official website of PM Modi's Mementos.

'Namami Gange' Mission

PM Modi launched Namami Gange, a flagship programme, in 2014 with an outlay budget of Rs 20,000 crore. The aims and objectives of the project are to clean the Ganga river, conserving the biodiversity in the region, carrying out afforestation projects, and increasing the sewerage capacity amongst others. With the funds obtained from the auction, the Namami Gange project will be supported to help in furthering the mission. Another important objective of this mission is to bring public awareness with activities such as workshops, seminars, campaigns, exhibitions, and cleanliness drives with community participation in the programme.

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has been making several efforts to rejuvenate and conserve Ganga, as the River serves as a lifeline to millions of people who live along its course and depend on it for their daily needs. 'Mission Gange' is, therefore, being organised to spread awareness about keeping the sanctity of River Ganga intact. It is being organised by the NMCG along with Tata Steels, as part of which the expedition team will be rafting through the Ganges-waters across seven major cities of India during the month-long journey.

Earlier Auctions by PM Modi

PM Modi received over 1,800 mementoes that were later auctioned; the proceeds of which will be used for the Namami Gange, a Central government project to clean the Ganga river. Big-ticket items and paintings were put for auction which received high bids. "Prime Minister Modi, even as Chief Minister of Gujarat, used to auction mementoes received by him, so that the proceeds could go for the education of girl children. Continuing the same practice, he has now enabled the collection of funds which will help clean up the Holy River Ganga," a statement said.
