After Lok Sabha poll debacle, BSP supremo Mayawati calls for key party meet ahead of Uttar Pradesh bypolls. Details here

Following the 2019 Lok Sabha debacle in which the BSP won only 10 seats, while the BSP-SP Gathabandhan together managed only 15 seats in Uttar Pradesh, party chief Mayawati on Sunday called for a key meeting with the party leaders. 

This development has come following the announcement made by Mayawati in which she called off the alliance with Akhilesh Yadav-led SP. 

In the meeting, Mayawati intends to get the feedback on the reaction of party supporters over suspending the BSP-SP alliance, sources said. Furthermore, sources said that she also plans to encourage party cadre to work for the bypolls and review plans to expand the party base among upper and backward communities.

Earlier this month, Mayawati broke the SP-BSP gathbandhan and announced that her party will contest the upcoming by-polls in Uttar Pradesh solo. In a press briefing, Mayawati said: 

"We cannot overlook political compulsions. The recently concluded Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh is the evidence that Samajwadi party has lost its base vote that is the Yadav community. Examples are the party bastion of Kannauj where Dimple Yadav lost, Badaun where Dharmendra Yadav lost and in Firozabad where Ram Gopal Yadav's son was defeated. If they did not get their base vote, how will their vote transfer to BSP?" she said.

Post the rupture in the alliance, BSP party workers have been in a dilemma as to how to go about the upcoming bypolls, sources added.

While Samajwadi party bagged 5 seats losing some of its bastion like Kannauj in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, BSP got 10 seats improving its tally from 2014 when the party was completely whitewashed.

Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party decided to contest the UP assembly polls separately after their combination failed to stop the BJP from gathering the majority of the seats in UP Lok Sabha elections. 

BJP, on the other hand, managed to secure 62 seats, 10 less than what the party had won in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
