Modi and Shah responsible for Kulgam attack: Brinda Karat

"We firstly condemn in the strongest possible way, the killings of the Bengali migrant workers in the valley. It is a shameful incident. And we have to say that the responsibility of the incident lies squarely with the utter failure of the policies regarding Jammu & Kashmir by Modi government and Amit Shah as Home Minister of India. They are telling lies to the people of India that there is normalcy in Kashmir. There is no normalcy in Kashmir. Kashmiri representatives are all locked up in jails. So who is there politically to fight these forces? Modi and Amit Shah are directly responsible for these terrible incidents in Kashmir," CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and senior leader Brinda Karat told Republic TV on Wednesday.

Regarding the European Union delegates visiting Kashmir, Brinda said, "I believe, to arrange the visit to brief the delegates -- is to add grave insult to the grievous injury which is being inflicted on Parliament, Constitution of India and democratic rights of the people of Kashmir. You do not allow the Members of Parliament and political leaders to visit there and keep representatives of people and civil society locked up and do not allow any political activity in Kashmir except for those under the BJP-RSS flag. And you allow the EU delegation and parade them around. And who are the members of these delegations? They are right-wing representatives who share the same sectarian approach as Mr Modi and Amit Shah represent."

On what Left's immediate demands were, the CPI(M) leader said, "We are strongly opposed to the abrogation and dilution of Article 370. We are demanding normalcy and restoration of democratic rights in Kashmir and release of all prisoners who have been arrested during August 5th decision. We demand full communication should be restored in Kashmir and most importantly you have to restore the autonomy of Jammu & Kashmir. You are demeaning the people of Kashmir by reducing its status from State to Union Territory. There is nothing to celebrate because you are destroying democracy and rights of the people of Kashmir."
