A day after the HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress -JD(S) coalition government fell in Karnataka after losing the trust vote, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi taking charge has held a meeting of all Congress Lok Sabha MPs at the Parliament on Wednesday.
As per sources, besides Karnataka crisis, discussion on US President Donald Trump's claims on being asked by PM Modi to mediate in Kashmir issue is also likely to take place during the meeting, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, who is also the Congress Parliamentary Party Chief.
On Tuesday evening, the long-pending floor test was finally allowed to take place by the Speaker in the Karnataka Assembly, following which the 14-month-old Congress JD(S) coalition government fell in the state after losing the Trust Vote. As the number was counted, the Congress-JD(S) stood at 99 and the BJP at 105. The MLAs by their vote proved that the coalition government did not enjoy the trust of his assembly.
The Numbers of the Floor test:
BJP: 105
Cong + JD(S): 99
Rebels: 15
Didn’t vote: 3
Total strength: 223
HD Kumaraswamy, losing a vote of confidence in the Assembly, went to Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to Governor Vajubhai Vala in the night.
Significantly, after the Congress-JD(S) government fell in Karnataka, former MP CM and BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan went onto claim that Congress infighting may result in its collapse in the state as well. He also claimed that there is an internal conflict between Congress and its allies, which may result in its fall in Madhya Pradesh as weel.
"We'll not cause the fall of govt here (Madhya Pradesh). Congress leaders themselves have been responsible for fall of their governments. There is an internal conflict in Congress, & support of BSP-SP, if something happens to that then we can't do anything," the BJP leader said speaking to news agency ANI immediately after then fall of coalition government in Karnataka.
After massive defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party lost its leadership with the resignation of Rahul Gandhi as the party president. Significantly, the Grand Old Party is trying to pick up the pieces in the aftermath.
