Former Home and Finance Minister P Chidambaram has taken a sarcastic dig at the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Satya Pal Malik, in light of the dramatic events of Wednesday night when the J&K Assembly was dissolved even as competing claims were sent to Raj Bhawan seeking to form a government in the state -- by Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP backed by the National Conference and the Congress, and by Handwara MLA Sajad Lone, backed by the BJP.

P Chidambaram claimed in a tweet that the J&K Governor was happy to keep the assembly going until a claim was made to form a government.

And then, applying sarcasm liberally, he proclaimed the Westminster model of Democracy that India has adopted as 'outdated', and put forth that the 'Gujarat model' has appealed to the Governor.

Chidambaram is not the first to question the Governor's decision of dissolving the assembly. Both Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, newfound allies, had questioned the decision.

While explaining his action, the Governor had essentially given four reasons -

  • Opposing ideologies coming together would have given an unstable government
  • Potential for horse-trading
  • Longevity of NC-PDP alliance was questionable
  • The security situation in the Valley

Meanwhile, the BJP had called the three-party alliance 'terror-friendly' and said fresh elections were what J&K needs at the moment.
