Shortly after actress-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar resigned from the Congress party on Tuesday, senior party leader Sanjay Nirupam took to Twitter and requested her to "rethink over her decision". Adding that he cautioned Urmila Matondkar long time ago and not get into infighting, Sanjay Nirupam stated that infighting is part of every organisation and it must fight against it instead of giving up. Sanjay Nirupam called Urmila Matondkar's resignation as "unfortunate".

Urmila Matondkar resigns

Urmila Matondkar, who contested from Mumbai North in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, resigned from the Congress party blaming 'petty in-house politics' in her statement. She stated in her statement that her complaint to former Mumbai Congress president Milind Deora went unheeded by the party leadership. In her statement, Matondkar has also alleged that the people who she blamed for her Lok Sabha poll defeat have been rewarded by the Congress.

"It is obvious that the key functionaries of Mumbai Congress are either unable or not committed to bringing about a change and transformation in the organisation for the betterment of the party. My political and social sensibilities refuse to allow vested interests in the party to use me as a mean to fight petty in-house politics instead of working on a bigger goal in Mumbai Congress," Urmila Matondkar wrote in her resignation.

In the 2019 General elections, Urmila Matondkar contested from Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat against BJP's Gopal Shetty. She, however, lost to the BJP candidate, with Gopal Shetty winning for the second consecutive year with the margin of 4,65,247 votes.

Mumbai Congress infighting

The in-fighting within the Congress party was out in the open when senior leader Sanjay Nirupam took to Twitter shortly after the resignation of Milind Deora as the Mumbai Congress chief. Taking to Twitter, Sanjay Nirupam had wrote that "removal of Milind Deora as MRCC President is an appropriate decision taken by the Congress party, claiming that Deora "was not able to perform & energise the cadre".
